Seed IP partner Syed Abedi is scheduled to speak at the upcoming Licensing Executives Society (LES) Annual Meeting 2022, taking place in San Francisco on October 17-19, 2022. The meeting, presented by the Licensing Executives Society of USA & Canada, is subtitled, "Commercializing Innovation."

Syed is a panelist for the session entitled, "Renewables and Renewed Interest in Hydrogen," taking place on October 17 at 11:15 a.m. -12:15 p.m. PST.

Speakers for this session include:

Syed Abedi | Partner, Seed IP Law Group LLP

Nousheen Huq | Senior Legal Counsel, Ballard Power Systems Inc.

Larry Kyle | Vice President, IP & Licensing, Westport Fuel Systems Canada Inc.

Session overview:

With the adoption of the Paris Convention in 2015 by 196 Parties, governments around the world have been working towards a common cause to combat climate change.  One of the key items that has been focused on in these efforts is the reduction of carbon emissions to limit global warming to less than 2, preferably 1.5 degrees Celsius, as compared to pre-industrial levels.  Global transportation – road (passenger), road (freight), aviation, shipping, and rail – account for about 20% of global CO2 emissions.  In order to reduce emissions, there has been increased interest in battery electric, fuel cell and alternative fuels, such as natural gas (and bio-methane) and hydrogen.  Our panel will review the global innovation trends relating to renewable energy technology and what these trends tell us.  For example, does the uptick in global trends mean more innovation?  What impact will the global patent trend have on climate change?  In addition to reviewing the broader IP landscape, we will focus on fuel cells (Ballard), the use of alternative fuels such as bio-methane and hydrogen in internal combustion engines (Westport), and possibly fueling infrastructure, including hydrogen fueling.  We will explore the licensing landscape and the road to commercialization associated with these areas.
