Steven D. Lawrenz Named New Chair of Seed IP Law Group’s Computer Science Group

Steven D. Lawrenz has joined Seed IP Law Group as a Partner and Chair of the firm’s Computer Science Group. He will direct a team of intellectual property attorneys and patent agents focused on serving the growing needs of clients on the cutting edge of computer software, Internet technologies, and artificial intelligence.

Steve, who moved to Seed IP from Perkins Coie LLP, brings over twenty-five years of experience helping clients develop highly strategic patent portfolios and evaluating strategies for maximizing their patent assets. “Steve’s computer science education, combined with his experience as a software developer prior to becoming an intellectual property attorney, gives him a unique perspective when working with clients, and many of those clients view him as a trusted advisor,” according to Kevin Costanza, Managing Partner at Seed IP Law Group.

Steve helps his clients develop highly-strategic patent portfolios in his areas of focus: computer software, Internet technologies, and artificial intelligence, and evaluates third-party patent portfolios, to counsel on avoiding patent infringement and to advise on the merits of acquiring particular patent assets. He also mines client patent portfolios to identify assets for licensing, patent infringement counterclaims, and divestment. Steve is an authority on Patent Trial and Appeal Board procedures – particularly appeals from examiners’ rejections – and is experienced at preparing and prosecuting design patent applications, both for user interface elements and physical articles.

Steve is admitted to the Washington State Bar and is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. He is also admitted to practice in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington. In addition, Steve is a member of the Washington State Patent Law Association.
